Remote data access

Remotely access data in place. From anywhere. In real time. With local performance.

We’re taught that proximity is important: wifi is stronger if you’re near a hub, security is better within a firewall, applications perform better if data is co-located. To optimize performance, you historically needed to move or copy your data to sit with the application.

Modernize your approach. Remove “distance” from the equation—and tap into a single, globally-accessible dataset. That’s Vcinity’s remote data access.

use cases

When might you remotely access data in place?

There are a variety of circumstances where the ability to remotely access data—without moving it—negates time lost, operational complexity, and drives higher business value, such as:

Time-sensitive AI/ML applications

Applications must quickly leverage large volumes of unstructured data, at the edge or in aggregation, with high efficacy.

Digitization of manufacturing process

Complexity and sprawl of TB's of data created daily across facilities is difficult and costly to manage.

Financial services data management

Financial companies, who often have data residency requirements to protect customer IP, want to remotely process and edit data.

Video rendering and editing

A media and entertainment company wants to reduce costs by leveraging pay-as-you-go cloud compute to render data on premise.

Access your data from anywhere, without moving it.

Faster time to insight

Take meaningful action up to 20x sooner on a single data set with local-like performance.

Enhance agility

Leverage of best-of-breed, multi-cloud capabilities without vendor lock-in.

Increase performance

Improve application performance with the flexibility to execute on data anywhere.

Improve security

Improve your risk profile by moving less data (and better protecting it in flight).

Reduce costs

Drastically reduce storage and transmission costs by eliminating the need for redundant data.

Go green

Reduce your storage and processing needs by minimizing copies—and improve your ESG score.

Difficulty accessing distributed data.

By 2025, IDC estimates 80% of the world’s data will be unstructured and geographically dispersed. This poses significant hurdles to cloud and on-prem applications’ ability to monetize data effectively—as data and applications need to be co-located to perform well. Historically, organizations move or copy the data to where the application resides—but moving data can be both slow and costly, particularly at scale (think, transfer costs, egress fees, etc.).

Waiting for data to arrive—as well as transmitting the data—can negatively impact productivity, affect employee collaboration and workflow efficiency, increases operational costs, delay decision making, and can put valuable IP at risk. Additionally, whether for regulatory or proprietary reasons, there may be situations where data can be difficult to move or cannot be moved at all—making it problematic to tap into the benefits of the cloud or engage a global workforce.

Vcinity Solution

Remotely access data while it stays in place.

Vcinity enables remote data access by turning your unstructured data into a single, globally-accessible dataset. Now, the world is your datacenter—meaning you can use your global data like it’s local—you know, everywhere.

Vcinity’s technology can be deployed as bookends across your choice of Hub (hardware), Edge (hardware, software), Cloud (software) locations.

An example of how it works.

Imagine you’re sitting in Los Angeles doing a large processing job—you have multiple teams around the world (say, Stockholm and London) doing post-production on high resolution on hundreds of hours of video shot in Sydney. Historically, you’d ship your raw footage from Sydney to Los Angeles and parse out copies for your post-production teams. They would then render the data locally and send edits back to you in Los Angeles. Each time you do this, you’re losing production efficiency (and money) while you’re waiting for sensitive, terabyte-sized video files to be moved to where they’re needed.

With Vcinity, you don’t need to keep moving your data around the world to make it available to your post-production team. Instead, you (and that team) can remotely access your video data in real time without waiting for slow data transfers or synchronization of file systems through a storage array or cloud-based replication. This saves you production time, transfer costs, reduces complexity of data management, and reduces security risks of your work.

How we make remote data access possible.

Hint: It’s not magic, just a series of well-engineered efficiencies with impressive results.
At Vcinity, we take a multiplicative approach to deliver our data access capabilities—wherein a symphony of individual efficiencies compound to create a high-performance yield. With more than 30 patents, we reframe requirements and expectations across multiple layers of the data sharing process. Below are a few examples of how we re-engineered these factors:

We segment each request such that if a user or application requests data, only the data requested is delivered—which lowers the amount of data that needs to be transferred.

Datacenter protocols are extended through the WAN, which allows memory-to-memory requests, removing overhead from input/output.

Instead of using resend, we leverage flow control and error correction—which creates substantial performance improvement over even UDP (which is often employed to try to gain wire efficiency).

The cumulative result of these adjustments is an incredibly effective way for applications to access a single, global dataset. Now, any application—whether at the edge, in a public or private cloud, or on premises—can access and use data thousands of miles away, as if it were local. This eliminates the need for local copies, thereby removing the time, cost, and complexity to store, move, and manage those duplicative datasets.
